Canadian Government to Cut Thousands of Jobs?
CTV - Government officials are planning a major shakeup of the federal public service that could see thousands of job cuts and produce savings of up to $4 billion a year.Wow. Who would have thought that government agencies are not efficient? Especially Federal Government agencies... Of course, the paper chase that always goes on in almost any department is absolutely mindnumbing, and trying to get almost anythign done with due expedition is nearly impossible. Try getting work approved with the Transportation Department... Heh.
The Globe and Mail reports that a two-year study led by the Treasury Board has found at least 41,000 of the government's 290,000 employees are working in jobs that could be cut if the work was transferred to a single new agency using fewer staff.
The new department is tentatively being called the Shared Services Organization.
Such jobs could include human resources, financial services, computer support and managing office supplies.
But the point of this shake-up is to save money. They estimate over $11 BILLION in 5 years. And much of these savings comes from every Office having their own people in charge of office supplies and tech support. In our modern world, tech support is important, but you would think that the Federal government could possibly implement a very slick system or at least train their staff a little better on the equipment they already use. I am all for the cuts. Too many folks have those nice cushy positions and it costs people like you and me tax dollars that could be better spent on schooling or health care.
