Der Fuhrer appoints Bolton to UN Posting

    Stardate 4333.0

WASHINGTON - Frustrated by Democrats and even a few Republicans, President Bush on Monday circumvented the Senate and appointed embattled nominee John Bolton to be ambassador to the United Nations.

“He is the right man for the job,” Bush told reporters at the White House. “This post is too important to leave vacant any longer, especially during a war and a vital debate about U.N. reform.”

Bush has the power to fill vacancies without Senate approval while Congress is in recess. Under the Constitution, a recess appointment during the lawmakers’ August break would last until the next session of Congress, which begins in January 2007.

Bolton is one of the biggest critics of the UN and in my opinion will do nothing good for the organisation. The arguement against him is old news. The big concern now, is this power that the President has to actually go around any sort of debate by making appointments while Congress is in recess. Seems to me, he could hold onto a rather large hand of cards, and play them all out when the time is right.

This is supposed to be a democratic nation. A leader going literally behind the back of the people who are meant to debate such things is definately not Democratic. He knows there are many who oppose this appointment, so naturally, he waited until there was nothing in the way of his appointment.

Now I am not an expert on this, but how far does this power go? What else can he do while the Senate is on break? I think though, that this is not a good thing for the UN. The US wants reform but it has to be "their way or no way". Bolton is the guy that will bring the UN down... and right now, I think we need them more than any other time.

Actually, lets rehash Bolton's esteemed character and how perfect he is for this role by quoting Canadian Cynic...

As you can read here, taking advantage of a recess appointment, President McFlightSuit appointed raving lunatic and arrogant, misogynistic prick John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.Let the preening smugness, grating condescension and abusive rancor begin.

Pretty much sums it up as far as I'm concerned.

Just to add to this, Crooks and Liars has a video up of Mr. Bolton talking about the UN... Watch it here in Windows Media Player format.
