CTV - Canadian ships sail from Halifax to aid Katrina
Three Canadian warships, the frigate HMCS Toronto, frigate HMCS Ville de Quebec, the destroyer HMCS Athabascan and the Coast Guard boat Sir William Alexander, are all sailing for the hurricane stricken area now. The warships are packed full of relief supplies, including water, food, blankets, and over 1000 troops help in the aid efforts. Some of the troops are specialists to help in rescuing and restoring communications and infrastructure. They include engineers, communications experts and combat divers, amonst others...
The large issue of safety is obviously paramount and US forces have assured the ships that they will be able to unload and work safely once they arrive.
The ships should arrive by week's end. Already, there are special units down in New Orleans helping out from Vancouver.
